Produce Prescription Initiative
Meal Prescription Initiative
Funded by a grant from the USDA-NIFA GusNip program, this initiative tackles heart disease, diabetes and gastrointestinal issues with fresh and local produce.
The Produce Prescription Program invites residents with specific health conditions to receive no-cost medically tailored prepared meals every week or produce boxes with proteins and recipes bi-weekly. The local produce and prepared meals are selected to meet participant’s specific health needs. This program also involves ongoing nutrition education and cooking demonstrations to support patients in eating fresh vegetables and fruit to improve their health.
Partners and collaborators include Methodist Hospitals, Indiana University Northwest School of Medicine and School of Health, Progressive Community Church, local federally qualified health centers, local physician offices and local farms.
Now enrolling individuals diagnosed with diabetes, coronary artery disease, or gastrointestinal disorders for the bi-weekly produce box program.
